The State of Tennessee asked me (along with other sculptors nationwide) to submit a proposal for a commemorative statue of David Crockett that would focus on his role as a statesman instead of the traditional image of him as a frontiersman.  Though the commission was awarded to another sculptor, I was honored to have ranked #8 on the list of professional sculptors nationwide that applied, and I can now publically offer my proposed sculpture as a bronze limited edition.

My excitement in creating this proposal was two fold:  I live in TN and Crockett is one of my heroes, but more importantly, I have always admired his determination to stand with the Cherokee people and vote against the Indian Removal Bill - losing his political career because of his action.  Though the bill was passed, Crockett received the undying gratitude of Cherokee Chief Ross and of the Cherokee people.  As a member of the Echota Cherokee tribe, this was especially poignant to me.

David Crockett Commemorative Statue Proposal

I depicted Crocket in the statesman garments as seen in portrayals of him during his work as a Statesman of the People.  Instead of buckskin breeches and moccasins, he is wearing slacks and shoes, along with the shirt and necktie from his portrait in the TN State capitol.  However, it is recorded that he would often wear his buckskin jacket and coonskin cap to identify himself with the 'common man' while he was at the State legislature or the US Congress.  I put the powder horn, knife and pouch at his feet instead of having him wear them.  This placement includes these well recognized attributes of Crockett without distracting from the attire of a Statesman.

Crockett carries his rifle "Betsey" in one hand to symbolize his time in the TN legislature, where he labored for the poor and rural settlers. The rifle was a gift from his TN constituents in gratitude for his efforts.  In his other hand Crockett carries the Cherokee Peace flag which was carried by the Cherokee people on the Trail of Tears - this represents his brave and courageous stand with the Cherokee during his time in the US Congress.   I proposed plaques with quotes from Crockett to be placed on each side of the plinth of the sculpture that speak to each of these monumental episodes in his life.
